#DS2. Urban Regeneration and IoT for More Inclusive Cities
Cooperativa SOCIOSFERA, Seregno (MB)
Project by Micol Buffo, Francesco Gargiulo, Beatrice Ferrari, and Karen Zamitis Bonilla Juarez.
MyCosmo exemplifies how technology can enhance the relationship between individuals with cognitive disabilities or dementia and their caregivers, whether parents or assistants. Often, these individuals structure their time based on a sequence of activities planned for the day. Therefore, it is crucial to plan a well-defined routine to provide autonomy and security by outlining upcoming activities.
MyCosmo is a wearable device – specifically a bracelet – paired with a tablet application. The caregiver can compose the day’s agenda in the morning or the night before, together with the individual, by inputting activities – displayed using AAC pictograms – into time slots. Once the agenda is saved, the activities appear chronologically on the bracelet’s screen. The user can view one activity at a time and, using buttons, scroll forward, backward, or return to the ongoing activity. These gestures were defined in collaboration with Sociosfera’s representatives to reduce the cognitive load on the individual.
The prototype was also tested with a group of parents of autistic children, and their feedback helped further simplify the bracelet’s interface by removing the time display and introducing a customization component (such as adding photos or drawings to indicate a specific activity). MyCosmo is therefore a product that helps reduce stress or disorientation for vulnerable individuals and supports caregiver activities.
